The 9/11 Tribute Museum is proud to announce the winners of its 13th annual Teacher Awards, which are given to teachers from across the country for the innovative and effective ways they have found to teach the challenging subject of the terrorist attacks of 9/11 to students.

Children in schools today were not alive in 2001 and the attacks to them are ancient history. Because the attacks affected our world so drastically, it is more important than ever that young people understand the impact that terrorism creates.

Teacher Awards winners work in elementary, middle school, and high school classrooms, teaching a variety of subjects. They find age-appropriate resources and develop projects that allow students to grasp the enormity of the attacks, understand the depth of loss, and the courage of those who responded to the attacks.

Award winners often use primary sources in their lessons, which complements the 9/11 Tribute Museum’s mission of person to person history. The teachers also show the value of compassion and community service to inspire their pupils to become good citizens.

Each winning school receives a cash award contributed by 9/11 family foundations who support the 9/11 Tribute Museum’s educational outreach. The foundations are:

  • Brooke Jackman Foundation
  • Christopher Slattery 9/11 Memorial Foundation
  • Greg Richards, Larry Polatsch, Scott Weingard (GLS) Memorial Fund
  • Terence D. Gazzani 9/11 Scholarship Fund
  • Terry Farrell Firefighters’ Scholarship Fund
  • Welles Remy Crowther Charitable Trust

On February 26, 2019 at 10 AM, the 9/11 Tribute Museum will honor teachers from across the United States for the lessons they have created to introduce students of all ages to the complex topic of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001 and their aftermath.

For only the second time, the 9/11 Tribute Museum Teacher Awards ceremony will be open to the public to highlight the work of educators in helping students to understand the effects of the attacks on 9/11 and how people have tried to make a positive difference in the years since.
This year’s award winners work in elementary and middle school classrooms, and in each case have found age-appropriate resources and have developed projects that allow students to find their own ways to pay tribute to both those lost and those who responded. Many of the teachers have utilized primary sources as a key element in their lessons. The teachers have also emphasized the importance of the compassion that followed the attacks as an inspiration to engaging their students in community service activities.
Each winning school receives a cash award contributed by 9/11 family foundations who support the 9/11 Tribute Museum’s educational outreach. The foundations are:

The Brooke Jackman Foundation
The Christopher Slattery 9/11 Memorial Foundation
The Greg Richards, Larry Polatsch, Scott Weingard (GLS) Memorial Fund
The Terence D. Gazzani 9/11 Scholarship Fund,
The Terry Farrell Firefighters’ Scholarship Fund
The Welles Remy Crowther Charitable Trust.

Also this year, the 9/11 Tribute Museum will be dedicating the awards to the memory of Jefferson Crowther who passed away recently. Jeff and his wife Alison were closely tied to the 9/11 Tribute Museum as sponsors of the Teacher Awards from the very first year they were given out. Everyone at the 9/11 Tribute Museum send their condolences to Alison and the entire Crowther family.

This event is open to the public. Educators and students are particularly invited to attend. The ceremony will be held at the 9/11 Tribute Museum, 92 Greenwich Street, New York, NY 10006.

Volunteers Assemble Bicycles for Children of Active-Duty Military and First Responders, Hundreds of Employees from Companies Affected by 9/11 Volunteer for the Event

On Wednesday, September 26, 2018, from 10 am–3 pm at the Oculus at Westfield World Trade Center, the 9/11 Tribute Museum will host its  9th annual 9/11 Day of Service & Remembrance. Over 400 employees from companies directly impacted by 9/11 will assemble bicycles to donate to the children of active-duty United States military. First responders from the NYPD, FDNY and PAPD will assist volunteers to assemble the bikes.

Volunteers and first responders will come together to remember loved ones, friends and colleagues, and to unite in the same remarkable way that the nation did in the aftermath of the attacks. 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance activities take place across the country throughout the month of September, as hundreds of thousands of volunteers paint and refurbish homes, organize food drives, restore schools, reclaim neighborhoods and support veterans, soldiers, military families and first responders. Participating in the bike build allows volunteers to commemorate friends and colleagues, and to invoke the ideals of service and humanitarianism that arose in the aftermath of the attacks.

At the 9/11 Tribute Museum people directly affected by the terrorist attacks share their stories, the strength of community rebuilding and how voluntary acts of service have changed people’s lives. The 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance is a special day for survivors to assemble bikes for children of military families. It is a fun day of team building and generosity in honor of all the support NYC received after 9/11.
– Jennifer Webb, CEO at 9/11 Tribute Museum Visitor

The 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance is especially meaningful for the 9/11 Tribute Museum. As Jennifer Webb, CEO explains, “At the 9/11 Tribute Museum people directly affected by the terrorist attacks share their stories, the strength of community rebuilding and how voluntary acts of service have changed people’s lives. The 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance is a special day for survivors to assemble bikes for children of military families. It is a fun day of team building and generosity in honor of all the support NYC received after 9/11.”

Special guest attendees include members of the New York City Fire and Police Departments and the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey. Volunteers from companies affected by 9/11 will be assembling bikes, including: BNY Mellon, CitiGroup, Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft, CME Group, Sandler O’Neill Partners and Zurich North America. BNY Mellon is the presenting sponsor.

BNY Mellon is committed to supporting our first responders, military members and their families. Every year, hundreds of our employees volunteer during the National 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance as a meaningful way to show support for our troops. Volunteers are organized into teams for the bike assembly. Stations for building bikes include inflating tires, quality control, attaching ribbons and bows and writing a note to each child in appreciation for their parent’s service. Bikes will be distributed to military families at Fort Bragg, NC.

Special thanks to Apex Xpress Inc., the FDNY, NYPD, PAPD, Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Brookfield Place and the US Army for generously providing time, services and equipment.

On February 26, 2018 at 10 AM, the 9/11 Tribute Museum will honor teachers from across the United States for the lessons they have created to introduce students of all ages to the complex topic of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001 and their aftermath.

For the first time, the 9/11 Tribute Museum Teacher Awards ceremony will be open to the public to highlight the work of educators in helping students to understand the impact of the attacks on 9/11 and how people have tried to make a positive difference in the years since. The 9/11 Tribute Museum chose to mark the 25th anniversary of the first attack on the World Trade Center by showing the public how important it is to expose those who were not born in 2001 to this world-changing event which seems like history to them.

This year’s award winners work in elementary, middle and high school classrooms, and in each case have found age-appropriate resources and have developed projects that allow students to find their own ways to pay tribute to both those lost and those who responded.  Many of the teachers have utilized primary sources, including oral histories collected by students, as a key element in their lessons. The teachers have also emphasized the importance of the compassion that followed the attacks as an inspiration to engaging their students in community service activities.

Each winning school receives a cash award contributed by 9/11 family foundations who support the 9/11 Tribute Museum’s educational outreach. Thank you for supporting the 9/11 Tribute Museum. Your contributions have enabled us to continue our programs and ensure that the global community never forgets what happened on 9/11.

Every day, the work of the 9/11 Tribute Museum continues to inspire people from all over the world who visit our galleries and take our guided walking tours. Our volunteers – family members, survivors, first responders, civilian volunteers and community residents – are all in a unique position to share what they experienced and how their lives were forever changed by this unprecedented event.

Our volunteer family makes a difference in people’s lives every day. You won’t hear these accounts told with this level of depth and personal insight in any other venue. We share it exactly as it was through our own eyes, a pure personal experience. We are the story and we are passing the story on to future generations and instilling hope for a better tomorrow.

Julie, you have been on my mind since I took your tour and I just want to thank you. Every day I remind myself of the importance of telling the story in honoring the people that we lost. You are the bravest person I’ve ever met, and I admire you for telling your story.
– 9/11 Tribute Museum Visitor

We will hold the memory of this graphic personal insight into the 9/11 memorial as one of the best guided tours we have ever taken.
– 9/11 Tribute Museum Visitor

As we look toward the New Year, I ask you to reflect on your own personal 9/11 experiences. Perhaps you have a direct or an indirect connection. Maybe you were here as part of the rescue and recovery effort. You may have experienced the loss of a loved one or friend. Or you simply want to learn, understand and pay tribute.

Whatever your reason, if 9/11 has personal meaning to you, I ask you to join me in ensuring that our history is preserved, that future generations will understand and that people all over the world will never forget. Please consider making a donation to the 9/11 Tribute Museum, any amount is greatly appreciated.

Each one of us has a 9/11 story, no matter where we live or what we do. Please help us ensure that our stories are never forgotten and that our history is preserved.

From our hearts, we thank you.

Volunteers from the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey visit the 9/11 Tribute Museum for this year’s Month of Service event.

Eight employees and retirees from the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey attended a storytelling workshop today at the 9/11 Tribute Museum as part of the agency’s Remembrance Through Renewal service activities during the month of September. Many stories were shared by the participants, several of whom had worked in the Twin Towers for decades, and two of whom had parents who worked for the Port Authority for decades. Tribute volunteer and Port Authority employee Peter Bitwinski recounted the story he tells on his tours to illustrate the way he selected key moments in his career that can be best appreciated by visitors coming to New York City to learn what happened here on September 11, 2001.

The group also had a tour of the galleries in the 9/11 Tribute Museum’s new home at 92 Greenwich Street, half way between the World Trade Center and the Statue of Liberty. They appreciated seeing the way that the exhibits include the history of the neighborhood, and extend into the present highlighting the service projects undertaken by people in the 9/11 community in response to the compassion received after the attacks.
