Over 400 employees from companies in Lower Manhattan came together to assemble 500 bicycles to donate to the children of United States military serving in the 82nd Airborne and New York City first responders.

Volunteers Assemble Bicycles for Children of Active-Duty Military and First Responders, Hundreds of Employees from Companies Affected by 9/11 Volunteer for the Event

On Wednesday, September 26, 2018, from 10 am–3 pm at the Oculus at Westfield World Trade Center, the 9/11 Tribute Museum will host its  9th annual 9/11 Day of Service & Remembrance. Over 400 employees from companies directly impacted by 9/11 will assemble bicycles to donate to the children of active-duty United States military. First responders from the NYPD, FDNY and PAPD will assist volunteers to assemble the bikes.

Volunteers and first responders will come together to remember loved ones, friends and colleagues, and to unite in the same remarkable way that the nation did in the aftermath of the attacks. 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance activities take place across the country throughout the month of September, as hundreds of thousands of volunteers paint and refurbish homes, organize food drives, restore schools, reclaim neighborhoods and support veterans, soldiers, military families and first responders. Participating in the bike build allows volunteers to commemorate friends and colleagues, and to invoke the ideals of service and humanitarianism that arose in the aftermath of the attacks.

At the 9/11 Tribute Museum people directly affected by the terrorist attacks share their stories, the strength of community rebuilding and how voluntary acts of service have changed people’s lives. The 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance is a special day for survivors to assemble bikes for children of military families. It is a fun day of team building and generosity in honor of all the support NYC received after 9/11.
– Jennifer Webb, CEO at 9/11 Tribute Museum Visitor

The 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance is especially meaningful for the 9/11 Tribute Museum. Volunteers from companies affected by 9/11 will be assembling bikes, including: BNY Mellon, CitiGroup, Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft, CME Group, Sandler O’Neill Partners and Zurich North America. BNY Mellon is the presenting sponsor.

Volunteers are organized into teams for the bike assembly. Stations for building bikes include inflating tires, quality control, attaching ribbons and bows and writing a note to each child in appreciation for their parent’s service. Bikes will be distributed to military families at Fort Bragg, NC.

Special thanks to Apex Xpress Inc., the FDNY, NYPD, PAPD, Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Brookfield Place and the US Army for generously providing time, services and equipment.

What makes the 9/11 Tribute Museum truly unique is our volunteer guides

The 9/11 Tribute Museum is a special place. Our volunteers, who bravely share their personal 9/11 stories with our visitors, are all members of the 9/11 community – family members who lost loved ones, survivors, Lower Manhattan residents and workers, rescue and recovery workers, police and firefighters. Not only do they inspire and provide healing to visitors and guests from around the world, but also they have also formed a tight-knit family among themselves.

A place of healing, supper and a testament to our strength.

– Lee Ielpi, Co-Founder

Meet some of the “Tribute Family” who, in their own words, detail the support they have found volunteering for the 9/11 Tribute Museum. Like separate threads being woven together, these everyday people from all walks of life have been bound together through a dark, historic moment. They have emerged from their personal tragedies ready to share some of the toughest moments of their lives, in order to educate the world and help themselves heal.
