The 9/11 Tribute Museum & 9/11 Memorial Museum presents We Were There

The 9/11 Tribute Museum, an official partner of the 9/11 Memorial Museum, presents We Were There, a weekly public program featuring two 9/11 Tribute Museum volunteer guides sharing their compelling and poignant personal stories in the Memorial Museum auditorium.

You will hear stories from 9/11 family members, survivors, rescue and recovery workers and local residents. A 9/11 Tribute Museum moderator sets the historic context for each of the stories and connects them to artifacts and issues that the visitors may experience in the Memorial Museum, transforming history from something abstract and distant to something that is close to each listener’s experience.

The program closes with an opportunity for the audience to discuss and reflect on the stories.

Howard Milstein/Emigrant Bank is the proud sponsor of the We Were There Program.

Join us and two members of the NYPD Emergency Services K-9 Team and their canine partner for a talk and demonstration showing their work to help keep the city safe!

NYPD Detectives Scott Mateyaschuk and Neal Campbell will talk about the training of the members of the K-9 team and the work they have done after 9/11 to continually improve the animals’ capabilities. Both men have not only worked to achieve higher standards for the K-9 teams in New York City, they have also worked with K-9 trainers from around the world who have come here to learn about their techniques. The officers have also responded to help people across the country after recent natural disasters.

The program will include a demonstration of the training techniques that are used to refine the skills of their canine partners.

The program is geared for families and has been scheduled to coincide with Midwinter Recess. Children will have an opportunity to ask questions and to make special thank you cards for members of the K-9 team.

Dog lovers, children and parents are welcome to attend this event. Due to the nature of the K-9 Unit training, no family pets will be allowed.

This program is free and open to the public, but reservations are requested.

Volunteering At Tribute Has Been One Of The Best Things I Could Have Done Since 9/11. It Truly Makes Me Feel Connected To Those Who Have Experienced What I Have. But I’ve Also Learned What Others Have Been Through.

– 9/11 Family Member

The 9/11 Tribute Museum, a project of the September 11th Families Association and non-profit organization, offers visitors from around the world the opportunity to learn about the events of September 11th 2001 and post-9/11 recovery/rebuilding from those who were there or are personally connected to the events.

Every Tribute volunteer has a direct connection to 9/11, as a survivor, first responder/recovery worker, family member who lost a loved one or Lower Manhattan resident/employee displaced by the attacks. We are committed to sharing the mosaic of stories from all who experienced the attacks firsthand or its aftermath personally.

It is our duty to ensure that the tragedy of the day, the rebuilding of community and the resilience of humanity is never forgotten, and your story plays a vital role in fulfilling this mission.

Join the 9/11 Tribute Museum’s volunteer program and use your story to educate and inspire people from around the world about the events of September 11th 2001.

Sign up for one of our upcoming volunteer training workshops, learn more about becoming a volunteer, or contact us online for further information.

Join us as Director Roz Sohnen presents and discusses her film, “An American Quilt- Stitching Together our 9/11 Memories”

On January 30, 2018 at 6:30 pm, the 9/11 Tribute Museum will present a film screening and discussion of Roz Sohnen’s touching documentary, “An American Quilt- Stitching Together our 9/11 Memories”. This 32 minute long documentary tells the stories of seven families, who lost loved ones on 9/11 and dealt with their grief by creating memorial quilt panels.

This project which I began in 2002 was a labor of love about the lives of ordinary people coping with extraordinary circumstances and refusing to remain powerless.

– Roz Sohnen, Director

The memories shared in the film are unique and personal:

  • Leroy Homer Jr. – co-pilot United Flight 93, plane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
  • Lt. Steven Bates – a firefighter who had no immediate family.
  • Paul Beatini – an engineer, didn’t work in the towers, was there for a meeting.
  • Sandra Wright – had just become a grandmother, commuted four hours daily.
  • Peter Anton Klein – a first generation American, had just married.
  • Clive Ian Thompson – who brought his family here from London and had
already survived the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in 1993.
  • Vincent Boland Jr. – 25, who had recently moved out of his family’s home in
New Jersey, eager to begin a new life in Manhattan.

After the screening, the filmmaker will talk about how creating art provided her with a window into the lives lost. This program is free and open to the public.

On Saturday, December 2, at 1:00 pm the 9/11 Tribute Museum will present a holiday program for families, Create a Peace Lantern.

At this time of year when people from many different traditions celebrate with candles, lamps and lights, the event will help children create their own personal messages of warmth and festivity.

To add to the richness of the program, leaders from the interfaith community, including representatives of Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu and Native American communities, will each offer a short prayer to celebrate the universal wish for peace, health and happiness for all human beings. Families will then have a chance to work together to create paper peace lanterns.

“The 9/11 Tribute Museum tells the stories of Compassion, Resilience and Service. The idea of bringing people together during the holiday season to celebrate our common humanity reflects the ideas we share in our gallery exhibits all year round,” noted curator Meriam Lobel.

The program is being organized in cooperation with Reverend TK Nakagaki, former Vice Chair of the Interfaith Center of New York, who also served as the president of the Buddhist Council of New York for 8 years and as a Community Liaison for the New York City Police Department since 2008. “My work has always given life to the wish for peace. I am happy to introduce New Yorkers to the richness of many holiday expressions of kindness and love.”

The tradition of interfaith prayer services was greatly expanded in the days, weeks and months after September 11, 2001.  On the day of the attacks, interfaith chaplains at Columbia University organized a campus-wide gathering for the members of the community. On September 20, President George Bush invited religious leaders from all around the country to a conversation about the sanctity of human life. Around New York City, clergy members from many denominations began ministering to the 9/11 family members and the people working on the recovery.

This program is free and children ages 4 and up are welcome to attend with an adult.

The 9/11 Tribute Museum will present K-9s Help Keep the City Safe on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at 1:00pm, at the 9/11 Tribute Museum, 92 Greenwich Street, New York NY 10006.

This family-friendly program will feature Robert Martino and his dog Vicki who help keep New York safe. Mr. Martino is a retired member of the NYPD who now works for MSA Security, one of the largest private security firms in the area with more than 200 animal handlers. Vicki is a three-year-old dog who previously worked as a seeing-eye canine, but, due to her extraordinary sense of smell and her curiosity about scents, became a bomb-sniffing dog and Mr. Martino’s canine partner. Together Mr. Martino and Vicki work at sporting events, concerts and transportation hubs to help ensure that people in the city are protected.

Families attending the program will have a chance to observe the dog demonstrating her olfactory skills, to learn about her training and to take a photo with the dog. Children of all ages are welcome. No family pets will be admitted due to Vicki’s professional training.
